Too Many Posts Today...But I Am Thinking Ahead

I have thought about homeschool for a while now....I would love to do it. There isn't anything really keeping me from it, except the fact that Kayla has Adhd and I am SO worried that her being home that much would drive me up the wall!! I am not unhappy with what she is learning in school, as a matter of fact, I am quite happy with the way things are going with what she is learning, etc. It's just that I am looking ahead to when she starts middle school. Which with the way life flies is only a year or so it seems, in actuality it will be 2 years before she enters the 6th grade.

You see my husband and I have discussed the middle schools around here and to be quite honest our options SUCK! The middle school in which we are zoned for is full of ghetto kids. Is ghetto even the right term to use? I am not sure. These kids are from the wrong side of the tracks. They are selling weed to make money and offering it to kids left and right. A friend of mine's son is in the 6th grade this year, he is such a cutie, and on the football team. Kayla was absolulty head over heals for him. Anyways. She said that he has been jumped twice since starting that school and offered drugs on several different occasions. WHAT? I just can't see this happening. Then another friend of mine's daughter goes there and she hasn't been jumped but the drugs are offered to her all the time. So this school is way outta the question. So, the other middle school that we could send her too which is not that far from here is in the richy section of town. I thought that this school would be a better choice. Although I have been proven wrong. You see this school has a huge meth problem. So, no way there either. The school that my mil works for which is way on the other side of town, they have fights break out every other day. Nope, not there either!! So, my only other option is to fight traffic to drive across the bridge and send her to the beach. This school as of now has had no problems with drugs or fights. It's just that the gas money is going to be insane!! Plus it's on the other side of the beach. I just don't wanna drive that far. So my thoughts are now turning to homeschool.

I just wouldn't know where to begin. I know that I would buy a lesson plan so that I would keep on track, plus I like being that organized! My only thing is Kelsie will be starting Kindergarten that same year. Do I keep her home and school her as well, or send her to school until middle school and do the same?? I am just at a loss on what to do. I want some opinions. I do not want Kayla to get behind at all, this is why I would purchase a lesson plan and plan plenty of field trips and outdoor activities to make sure that she was at least well ahead of what is going on in public school.

What are some opinions??

I have a SIL who has homeschooled her 9 year old daughter since pre-k. She is using a homeschool package that was purchased through her church. They recently had her tested and she is well advanced compared to her peers who go to public school. They have a school room set up in the house and keep the same hours as the public schools. They also belong to a homeschool group where they meet with other children for social events, field trips, and some times even teach the other children some of the speciality type of classes.

Hopefully that helps you...

And Happy Belated Mother's Day.

Well, some pros of homeschooling are you know what your child is learning (no sex ed earlier than what you want)no evolution taught,etc...
Also, kids grow up so fast and so you have so much more time with them and you know what is going on in their life.
Another pro is you can teach them whatever you want them to learn in addition to staying on a certain subject longer if needed unlike public schools;they would have to keep going so they could stay on track with what they have to teach.
I think you should give it a shot!
I would give it a month to get a schedule started and if it didn't work out for the family, then at worst, just send her back to regular school. The curriculum thing reminds me...I'm about to go on Freecycle and see if anyone has any first grade curr. they are about to be through with.

Nice to meet your Joanna! What a wonderful blog. So homeshooling has crossed your mind. I home schooled my children (at the request of my son) from 6th grade through his 9th grade year. I home schooled my daughter through middle school. I watched my children soar during a time which is most difficult for most. They discovered talents and grew them durig this time, giving them a sence of idenity and accomplishment. When they tested for placement on reentering school, even though they were always good students, their scores where significantly higher!Actually, homeschool is a wonderful learning environment for children with adhd. I saw you on my daughters blog heartofamom. Well, have a wonderful day.
